Cheraw Intermediate Celebrates Reading
Cheraw Intermediate School recently held a series of “RawTown Read-In” celebrations at Arrowhead Park to commemorate a year-long emphasis on reading. Each grade level was treated to a morning full of reading festivities. These first ever “RawTown Read-In” celebrations began with a book poster parade into the park, as each student carried a poster he or she had created of his/her favorite book from the school-year. The posters (on wooden stakes) were displayed around the picnic area during the event. After arriving, students and teachers gathered for an opening ceremony, which was kicked off by members of the Cheraw High School varsity cheerleading squad, who pumped up the kids with some reading cheers created just for the occasion. Next, classes and small groups of students presented their own original cheers, raps, songs, poems, and dances about reading. Following the entertainment, storytellers and readers filled the football field and read and told stories for an hour to groups of children. After lunch, students were able to participate in a book trivia contest for prizes. The fourth grade classes enjoyed having Mr. Jay Lewis of 93.9 My FM as a special guest. Jay broadcasted live for an hour from the Read-In and let children talk and answer questions on the radio. Everyone participated in a tour of the book posters before boarding the buses to return to school.
