During the month of January, New Heights accepted donations for Sandy Hook Elementary. Due to an outpouring of generosity by students, faculty and community members, the fundraiser was extended through mid-February. Hundreds of snowflakes covered the wall as the grand total climbed to an overwhelming $800. New Heights would like to say “Thank You” to everyone who supported our efforts.  Special contributions were received from Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School, Cheraw High School Interact Club and the following community members: Carrie Kirkley, Richard & Cathy Carnes, John & Metta Pittman, Kenny & Wanda Douglas, Bryan & Lynn Catoe, The Leaird Family, Brock Enterprises, The Brock Family, The Scandrol Family, Janet Mangum and Michelle Medlin.

The donations, along with snowflakes representing the donors, will be sent to Sandy Hook to assist with building new playground equipment and providing educational scholarships in memory of those who lost their lives. Project coordinators: Michelle Medlin and Janet Mangum.

Chesterfield County School District Amends Calendar

The Chesterfield County District has rescheduled the parent conference scheduled for Nov. 5, replacing it with two late afternoon and early evening dates. Parent conferences will be held after school in the McBee, Cheraw, and Chesterfield attendance areas Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.

Schools in the Jefferson-Pageland attendance areas will hold parent conferences after school on:

October 29:  3:30pm until 7:00pm       and

November 1: 3:30pm until 7:00pm

Parents who have conflicts with these dates are asked to contact individual teachers about scheduling a conference.  Dr. Harrison Goodwin, superintendent, said that the new dates should benefit parents and families. “Working parents often find the conferences held after school much more convenient to attend,” says Goodwin. “Also, with Nov. 6 a scheduled holiday for elections, families are now free to have a four-day weekend break.”

Arts Alive 2012

The 2nd Annual Arts Alive program was held on Thursday, May 26 - attracting a crowd of over 400 parents, special guests and community members. As guests traveled down the Elective Hall, they stopped at kiosks to view past performances of the Chorus, Band and Drama Club and viewed various pieces of student artwork. During the program, students from Ms. Karla Broome's Art class highlighted the artists studied during the semester. A beautiful display of student artwork was placed in the gym for guests to view.  Two NHMS students were recognized during the program as 2012 Superintendent's Art Award winners: Kevin McCammon, 8th grade, was the Middle School Winner and Destiny Johnson, 6th grade, was the Overall District Winner. The band and chorus, led by Director Geoffrey Mack and Assistant Chad Johnson, gave astounding performances. Our guest speaker for the event was Jefferson native, Tony Adams. Tony has worked hard to transform his love for music into a rewarding career. He has been in the entertainment business for over 20 years and currently sings every weekend on board a cruiseliner, the Emerald Princess II.

NHMS is very proud that over 40 percent of the student population are involved in the visual and performing arts programs.
